What is diabetes?

Diabetes means that the sugar levels in your blood are too high. To understand diabetes, you must first know how glucose and insulin work when your body digests food.

glucose (sugar) and insulinWhat is glucose?
Your body changes the food you eat into glucose (sugar). Your blood carries this sugar to all the cells in your body. Your body uses it for energy.

What is insulin?
Insulin is made by the pancreas. When insulin enters the bloodstream, it acts as a "key." It opens the cells for sugar to enter and be used by your body.

normal - insulin opens the cells so that sugar can enter - blood vessel and cells- Type 2 diabetes - high sugar levels caused by insulin resistance - cell sugar entrance is closed
